Cost of living support

Countries around the world are facing rising goods and energy prices, inflation and cost of living pressures. The rising cost of living is affecting everybody in different ways. The government is providing £37 billion this year to help households combat the rising cost of living. See what cost of living support you could be eligible for. 

The government have launched a help for household website which can be found here along with more localised support detailed below:

Support for low income households

Warrington Borough Council has been allocated money in the Household Support Fund to help provide some financial support for households on the lowest incomes, particularly those including children and pensioners, who are struggling with energy, food and water bills. Applications to the Energy Rebate scheme have now closed. WBC will continue to process any applications they have received in the coming weeks.

For households in bands A – D who did not apply but they know to be eligible we will be issuing a cash voucher in the post by the end of October which can be redeemed at the Post Office. For anyone who has requested that the £150 be credited to your council tax account before this has now been added and your next/future payments reduced accordingly.

Warrington Borough Council are in the process of building the application for its discretionary scheme and expects that this will be available by the end of October. There are extra payments to help with the cost of living if you're entitled to certain benefits or tax credits, including the Disability Cost of Living Payment, Pensioner Cost of Living Payment and more. Housing benefit

Housing benefit is money you may be able to claim to help pay the rent for your home.  

You can make a claim if you have reached state pension age, have a low income from your pensions, benefits or work, including self-employment, and have less than £16,000 in savings. To make a claim visit the housing benefit section on the WBC website.

Homelessness

Warrington Borough Council has a legal duty to help people who are homeless or about to lose their home. If you have no home or have been asked to leave your current home within 28 days, the Homelessness and housing advice service can provide you with help and support. 

Support for mortgage interest

If you’re a homeowner, you might be able to get help towards interest payments on your mortgage, loans you’ve taken out for certain repairs and improvements to your home. This help is called Support for Mortgage Interest. Visit the government website to find out if you are eligible and for information on how to apply. 

Energy bills national support scheme

Over the past year, global energy prices have soared which has led to an unprecedented rise in household energy bills. This winter millions of households across the UK will receive non-repayable discounts on their energy bills. Households will start receiving £400 off energy bills from October, with the discount made in instalments to help families throughout the winter period. Citizens Advice

Citizens Advice provide support and advice on a wide range of matters relating to benefits, debts, work, finance and energy bills, including support if you don’t use gas or electricity for your heating or have a prepayment meter. You might be able to take advantage of certain benefits, grants and help offered by the government and energy suppliers. Visit their website to find out more and view the contact details for your local branch
